Retaining Walls · Orlando
Retaining Walls, planned around the water.
Central Florida is mostly flat, so a retaining wall here is rarely about a mountain slope. It holds a raised bed, levels a sloped side yard, edges a lakefront or pond-side bank, or steps down a grade change at a patio.
We build segmental block walls, raised planter walls and seat-height walls. A wall holds soil back and gives plants a place to live, so we plan the planting and the water along with the block.

Retaining Walls
Walls we build
- 01
Segmental block walls
Block stacked in tidy courses, a common choice for holding soil back and keeping a clean, straight line.
- 02
Raised planter walls
A low wall around a bed lifts the planting off the ground and gives you soil depth you control.
- 03
Seat-height walls
Wall tops at sitting height double as a bench beside a patio or along a garden bed.
- 04
Side-yard leveling
A sloped side yard becomes a flat, usable strip when a wall holds the high side.
- 05
Lakefront and pond-side banks
On a lake or pond slope, a wall can edge the bank and hold the planting above the water.
- 06
Steps at a patio
A grade change beside a patio or walk is stepped with low walls, so it reads as design instead of a drop.
The process
How a wall is built
- 01
Dig and compact the base
The footprint is excavated and the base compacted, so the wall sits on firm, level ground.
- 02
Set the first course
The first course goes in level and partly buried. Every course above follows it, so we take our time here.
- 03
Stack, backfill, drain
Block goes up in staggered courses, with gravel behind the wall so water can drain instead of pushing on it.
- 04
Cap and plant
Caps go on top, soil goes behind, and the planting and drip line go in last.
Local know-how
Walls and water in Orlando
Summer downpours push water into the soil behind a wall, and sandy ground can wash out at an open edge. That is why drainage gravel and a buried first course matter more than height.
Taller walls may need extra reinforcement. We will tell you if a wall needs more engineering or a permit, before any block is stacked. In raised beds, drip line keeps the plants watered without soaking the block.
“Marcus and team did great work. He explained everything he was going to do and did it all as he said, efficiently with high quality work. I definitely recommend him.”

Do retaining walls need drainage?
Yes. Water that builds up behind a wall pushes on it. We set gravel behind the block so water can move out, and we keep sprinkler and storm runoff in mind when we plan the wall.
Does my wall need a permit?
That depends on the wall. We will tell you if a wall needs more engineering or a permit, and we say so before the work starts.
Can you put irrigation in a raised bed wall?
Yes, that is our trade. Drip line runs inside a raised bed so plants get water at the root, and we plan the line before the soil goes in.
What are the walls built from?
Mostly segmental block, on a compacted base with gravel behind and caps on top. The right size and style depends on what the wall has to hold and how you want it to look.
